In my MS, music factors alot into Alesia's personality and her diary entries. This got me to wondering, what type of music do your charcters prefer? I'd say out of my two narrators, Zoe, the older sister prefers things like film soundtracks, Evanescence, 3 Doors Down, Three Days Grace, Flogging Molly, etc.. Alesia on the other hand is a headbanger/grunge type. She likes bands like Cannibal Corpse, Lamb Of God, Alice In Chains (her favorite), Obituary, and so on...
That's hard to say since I don't really know any music made in the worlds where my characters live. But one of them, Lina, I suppose listens primarily to more "underground" music like Biome (dubstep/drum and bass), Noisia (electronic) and Combichrist (aggrotech). I'd say she also has a soft spot for music that sounds like that of the pre-war music, when her grandparents were her age. I think she'd really like Bing Crosby's I'm Through With Love.
So, should we abandon this thread and start a duplicate in "Prompts," or do we want to keep using this one and let the mods decide whether to move it?
It's up to Alesia. It was his idea. The advantage is that as a writing prompt, members could be encouraged to show the character with his or her music in a paragraph or two, and how it shapes the character or even drives the story.
My protagonist is a gifted musician and guitarist whose dreams were crushed. He doesn't stick to one genre, but explores all of them for ideas, rhythms, beats, melodies, how notes connect in favorite and famous music. I loves all genres, but prefers to rule out particular subs and performers as not offering anything of value. Of his favorites is Sam Cooke, Tool, Nightwish, Van Halen, Aerosmith, Gladys Knight, Mozart, Ronald Jenkees.
If you want to move it over to writing prompts, feel free to do so. Might be interesting to see how different MC's are affected by music.
My second novel deals very heavily with music, as my MC is a guitarist who teams up with a singer in the hopes of playing the town's annual music festival. She's predominantly into classic rock music, with her favorite band being Styx, but throughout the course of the story she listens to/mentions many others--Peter Frampton, Rush, Heart, Dire Straits, U2, etc, as well as more modern bands like Dave Matthews Band, Foo Fighters, Paramore, and Mumford & Sons, for example. Then there are all the bands I made up, like The Wandering Free, Fence the Panda, The Rage Unanimous, and Jimmy & the Musketeers. Sadly, they all sound like they could be real with names like those in today's indie scene. None of my other works deal with music, so I haven't really thought about their MCs.
Uh oh...can't tell if yer yankin' my chain or if I need to start thinking of less realistic band names...
Well Idk what kind of music most of them listen to, outside of gunfire, explosions, and the cries of defeated enemies. Though the Centuria do have a kind of Techno. And the giant mutant spiders on Mars play hollow logs in the deep deserts, called the Desert Bellows. Though it is merely mentioned in passing.
