Perigee. As a Finn I don't have as large vocabulary as those who speak English as they native language. So this was a new word to me. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perigee_(disambiguation) And so was apsis. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apsis I suppose I will forget both soon, because I don't have much use to them.
These aren't official words, but I really like this channel. "A compendium of invented words written by John Koenig, that aims to fill holes in the language—to give a name to emotions we all feel but don't have a word for. The author's mission is to capture the aches, demons, vibes, joys and urges that roam the wilderness of the psychological interior. Each sorrow is bagged, tagged and tranquilized, then released gently back into the subconscious."
recondite (adjective) 1. Difficult or impossible for one of ordinary understanding or knowledge to comprehend. 2. Or, relating to, or dealing with something little known or obscure. "a recondite fact." 3. Hidden from sight; concealed. (source: Merriam-Webster online)
The sound file on how that name is pronounced is fascinating to listen to. There's no rhyme or logic to it... How on earth did you even remember how to spell the name!? I wouldn't even be able to search for it.
Saw this the same day on somebody's Medium profile. Was wondering what it meant but was too lazy to look it up, and then I forgot. Currently learning Japanese on Duolingo. Can't wait to actually take some classes at university.
Thanks, you too! Out of curiosity, how far along are you? I'm still on the first two hiragana stages, but I only started a few days ago, and I'm halfway through level two on each of them. I'll be starting stages three and four today, and will wait a few days before reviewing the first two stages again.
Konnichiwa, paperbackwriter-san. Uhh, arigatou gozaimasu? xD Do you actually know Japanese, paper, or are you Google translating? ;P
Here's a few good ones my grandfather taught me: Scapegrace - a rascal Bathycolpian - large-breasted Hoi-polloi - the common people, the masses
That's freaky. If I haven't encountered a new word in the wild, I pull up an online dictionary or thesaurus and type in a few letters, such as rec or mor and pull up a word I don't know. That's how I got "recondite". ETA: Today's word: moquette (noun) a carpet of upholstery fabric having a velvety pile (source: Merriam-Webster)
Looks like I've got a lot of catching up to do. I'll have to talk with you about it some time. You and @Iain Aschendale.
I went when there was money to be made from English teaching. Which turned me into a kind of superficial mercenary. Now people go for the cultural experience which is much healthier as I look at it now in hindsight.
If I'm not mistaken, I believe Iain also teaches there. I know what you mean though. I'll be studying abroad there. Mainly for the cultural experience as you say, and having a personal journey, but it's possible that I could become a foreign correspondent. Do some journalism.
plus my wife of the last 29 years is Japanese....oops hope people don't mind us derailing here its easy to become a Japanophile. I still am.
It's that damn anime, degenerate weeb shit! It's turning the frogs gay! I'm happy for you. Marriage isn't all sunshine and rainbows as they cliché, but I wouldn't complain if I came back to the states with a wife. Or would that make me a cultural appropriator? Oh, it's all so confusing.
Telemetry is the automatic measurement and wireless transmission of data from remote sources. In general, telemetry works in the following way: Sensors at the source measure either electrical data (such as voltage or current) or physical data (such as temperature or pressure). These measurements are converted to specific electrical voltages. A multiplexer combines the voltages, along with timing data, into a single data stream for transmission to a remote receiver. Upon reception, the data stream is separated into its original components and the data is displayed and processed according to user specifications.
good one. we speak the same language.(political language that is) wish I could make that joke in Japanese but my language skill is low for the amount time I spent there.
Sorry this reply is late, didn’t check the forums for a few days. I’ve been doing it for maybe a month and a half(?). I’ve gotten gold (level five) on Hirigana 1-3, and the most advanced lessons available to me are food and time 1. I’d love to DM about it sometime
