Degauss verb ELECTRONICS remove unwanted magnetism from (a television or monitor) in order to correct colour disturbance.
And it's pronounced so it rhymes with de-mouse or de-louse. I only know that because there used to be an electronics repair shop across the street from where I worked, and one of the guys who worked there told us that.
Guess it’s not a word I’ve ever used in my vocabulary. There’s probably more technical related words I’ve not yet heard about.
Another one: A polyphyodont an animal whose teeth are continually replaced. Not many of these beside crocodiles, geckos, elephant and some types of fish.
Sharks. Elephants are interesting in that they don't grow "new" teeth, but their molars never stop growing as their abrasive diet wears them down.
I should add how I first learned the term. I was in the navy and the ship I was on had a degaussing station. It was a box on the inside of the hull about the size of a cedar hope chest that had electrical cables running into it. Apparently passage through water magnetizes the hull slightly and it is one of the methods submarines use to detect targets on the surface.
slung shot noun a hard object, such as a metal ball, attached by a strap or thong to the wrist and used as a weapon.
reminds me of a word I just learned yesterday. I read it in a book about archaeology. Bola stones are stones with grooves cut into them for attaching twine. They were used in the stone age for hunting and fishing, and presumably could have been used for a weapon.
I mentioned it, as an observation of how language usage has changed. I could image the social media reaction to using it today.
OMG. I have a story about that. In the navy it is called a monkey fist. It was used there for throwing small lines from a pier to berthing ships. The crew on the ship would gather the line which was lied to larger ropes until the two inch mooring lines that would tie the ship to the pier. I was near the electrical connection talking to the chief electrician's mate who was supervising the connection to shore power. All of a sudden the chief's eye went wide and he shouted a warning to me. I turned to my left and saw the monkey fist heading straight at my face. I threw my hands in front of my face defensively and caught it. It stung like hell. I looked at the chief then looked down to the pier and everyone's mouths were hanging wide open. No shit (<requisite epilogue to a sea story.)

Trompe l’oeil noun is an artistic term for the highly realistic optical illusion of three-dimensional space and objects on a two-dimensional surface. Trompe l'œil, which is most often associated with painting, tricks the viewer into perceiving painted objects or spaces as real.
"Haint": Ghost A shade of blue (particularly a shade of blue associated with warding off ghosts in the Gullah Geechee culture)
On a related topic I got challenged in a game of Scrabble on Cyan, a shade of blue. Specifically the color of the blue band on the old color television test pattern.
