    Short Story What qualifies as a short story?

    I'm new here and I was wondering what the difference is between a short story and a regular story. If a story is longer than a short story does that make it a novel? Are there requirements that have to be met for a story to be a short story or a novel? Sorry if this is confusing, but I have some stories that I have started and I don't know how to classify them. Thanks!

    It's just word count.

    1000-7500 is a short story.
    7500-15000 is a novelette
    15000-40000 is a novella
    40000 is a short novel

    Every market plays a bit with these numbers. It's not like there's some sort of absolute authority on them.
    Some pubs request a short and will let you get away with 10000 words, for instance.
