In the most desperate times, even a sane man must do something as revolting as cannibalism to survive. They may not like it one bit, but they'll have to. Of course, eventually some might get tired of having to devour other human beings, tired of having to question God and their own morality by doing this, so they opt to let themselves die. He is a countertenor (sopranist), and he would get to sing a countertenor role. Probably Orfeo in "A midsummer night's dream". He sing the role successfully, but his voice (although vibrant, beautiful and vivid) is starting to wear. He is, after all, close to 60. The Arena: an annual, bare-knuckle brawl between the various factions of the Corporation - natives, prisoners and exclavists alike; even ferals in some cases. Other than being unarmed, there are no rules, and although it's supposed to be non-lethal, people do die. Crippling injuries and maimings are common enough to be a death sentence. After the Roth dynasty quashed and subjugated the original factions/families, there was incredible animosity and hatred left over from decades of feuding between the groups, who were now coerced into cooperating. The Arena event was implemented to allow them to take out their aggression in a controlled setting. There isn't much strategy that isn't classic game theory. Gang up on the weakened crews, stab the strong in the back when apropos, conserve blood and strength til it's mano y mano, one against another. Otherwise, the winners (if they walk away with the majority of their legs, fingers, eyes, etc.) are revered as champions of bravery and brutality for the rest of the year. Armada has fought in it for the last couple years, but never won. More out of having nothing to lose than anything. Leon fights alongside him during the story, and their team wins, although Leon breaks ribs, his nose and jaw, an eye socket and loses a finger. Arma suffers similarly gruesome wounds, and is badly concussed by the end of it. Both of them need the better part of a month to re-cooperate (there's a reason they're able to heal so fast), which, if not for their winning, would normally mean expulsion into the wastes and death. Quite a cathartic endeavor overall, although more often than not, a suicidal one. Its science fiction so the author does not exist but it would probably be Silistio, a dead philosopher that wrote about the crimes of the state and saw it as a necessary evil that should be minimized from its current size and striped of its crushing economic power. Silistio was killed but Lapis has read all his works and has copies of them. If he could talk to him they would probably discuss his work on how to dismember the state for prosperity. Depends on who you're talking to. Helen, of course, would survive because she is crazy prepared, and had been through military training before leaving to become a privateer captain. Your MC has the daunting task of guiding a village full of refugees from the warzone with all kinds of hell gunning for you and said villagers. Goal? A boat which will take them to freedom. What will your MC do about this?
Leon, "That would be daunting. Namely, that I'm used to... neutralizing targets, not saving them. Not that I've never done escort missions, but they're a rarity in my experience, and for a half-dozen people at most. First, I'd do as much recon as possible, and/or review what existed - look for choke points for laying traps, low-intensity zones of conflict, wooded areas and areas with significant cover in general, ya know, looking ahead toward the path of least resistance, the means with which to cover our tracks, etc. Second, I'd give up on saving all of them, or even most of them. Such naivety would imperil the group, overall, more than otherwise. If we slow down for the weak, old and sick, we risk the strong, young and healthy - the ones who... well, "deserve" isn't the right word, but whose survival would be justified, comparatively. Call it ruthless, call it pragmatic, I don't care. Lastly, the actual evacuation toward the river, based on the aforementioned recon and planning. If met with light resistance, stick together and plow through - 2/3rds of our operatives spearheading the march, 1/3rd heading up the rear. If we run into forces too heavy to directly engage, break up into smaller groups and split up, keeping in constant contact - ready to begin reallocating and consolidating our forces at a moment's notice. When we're finally beyond the main warzone, leave 3/4ths of our men to dig in, set traps and area-denial-devices, and prepare to stop any oncoming enemy troops at all costs - the rest of our forces would continue to escort the survivors to the evac. Maelthran really, really enjoys waking up and going downstairs in the inn to find that bacon and eggs are on the menu.
