what's a good way to transition to a flashback?

Discussion in 'Plot Development' started by DisFanJen, Nov 24, 2010.

The questions in the title for this one.

I'm writing a short story where the MC is waiting for something to happen wondering why the hell he's even there and then I want to transition to a flashback where you see why he's waiting, however I can't find a way to transition that flows and isn't cheesy.

I don't want to go dow the 'It all started when...' route and I don't want to just scene jump.

So do you have any slick ways of transitioning?

I really dislike flashbacks and dream sequences. But that's neither here nor there, I suppose. If an author if going to have a flashback, I prefer a clean break where the author just moves to the flashback scene.

Alternatively, you could have the MC see something that is common to the present scene and the flashback, and transition using the observation of whatever that object is, or his thoughts passing over a common memory.
