I've run into a situation where my main character has met someone who is very important to the plot. This guy has sort of just approached her and introduced himself at a cafe. My issue is I'm not entirely sure how someone like my main would naturally react to that. I'm kind of a distrusting person when it comes to strangers, polite, but I don't like interacting with people face to face. My main character is kind of the opposite in that she's sweet and open to everyone. I'm not really sure how to write that in, but I don't want to change my main character. Any advice?
Yeah, he sees her do a little happy dance when she gets her food and he thought it was kind of cute. When she looked at him, he decided to talk to her.
Hmm. I agree with the gut feeling question. And what's her childhood training? Did her mother tell her not to talk to strangers, her father tell her not to talk to boys that she hasn't been introduced to by somebody she knows, etc.? Edited to add: Also, has the guy been looking for an excuse to meet her, or is it genuinely spontaneous on his part?
To her, he seems kind of cheeky and just seems like any other college kid. She grew up with only her mother, who raised her very protectively. She never got to go out or do anything without her mother's approval. Her mother kept very close tabs on her daughter.
I feel like she'd nervously brush him off, then. A frozen smile, a nod at his name, she doesn't give her name, and she becomes absorbed in her book or her tuna salad. Edited to add: That doesn't mean it has to go that way. That's just what strikes me as most likely.
I'm glad you said that because that would be more natural for me to write. Don't feel like you're telling me what to write. I never asked you what exactly she'd say, I just wanted an idea of how people would feel if this happened to them in that scenario. You're helping, don't worry.
