Word is so simple and straightforward to use with KDP I'm surprised everybody doesn't use it. TOC takes about five minutes to sort out.
Good idea about Mark Dawson's group; just went over and asked to join. I downloaded Jutoh, btw, and couldn't make head or tail of it. I figure that once I get the bugs out of the style sheet I'm building now, it'll be a template for future books. Meaning I have to write them.
Nice, but I don't use MS Word. I see you can upload your presale ms using HTML, so I'll see what the Kindle TOC looks like once I do.
Good luck! Remember, that 5 minutes was not for the TOC, but WHOLE document. Looking back, you have been wrestling with the HTML since January, seven months. If you don't like Word, what you are using as word processor almost certainly will generate a Word-compatible .docx file, which is all you need.
Scrivener and open office can both output a doc...scriv can also output a mobi or ePub file directly...
It could never be five minutes for me. It's already taken me two hours and counting just to read all the stuff about what to do. The KDP site is driving me crazy, because it's giving me a lot of info about posting a book, but I still can't find the link where I can actually do it. I know that makes me sound really scatterbrained and stupid, but there it is. And actually, I pulled off the ebook formatting for several months to format the print book and do more edits. Not to mention working 12-plus hours a day on my regular jobs. And playing around on social media. So it all has to fit in around the edges.
