When to tell people you are writing?

    funny, I’d convinced myself I’d tell my family at 100,000 words. Reached it recently and since then have been planning the next section. Still doesn’t feel right. Think I’m going to wait until it’s a completed first or second draft. Feels weird keeping it a secret but having a forum like this helps!

    You should probably say something before they get a letter for you saying you've been nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature. Those kinds of shocks seldom end well.

    The last part of this is also me!

    I have started telling a few people that my long-term career goal is to be able to survive on my own writing, but that it will take time. My job is a writing job, so people at my workplace know that I am a writer, but they don't know I write creatively. A few people also know that I am not overly happy in my day job and would absolutely love to announce that I can finally afford to leave.

    I did admit to my boss that I don't consider my job a career and would like to change one day... that was in a performance review that happened on a day when I wasn't in the best frame of mind haha.
