Machine Head and Five Finger Death Punch, cause I can relate to
their songs, and they both have a certain shall we say sincerity about
them. Not every song, but a good number of them. (C'mon they have
enough albums each to make choosing just a song or two, difficult). :)

Black Label Society has touched me (get your mind out of the gutter)
in different ways to MH or 5FDP has, but when their serious stuff is
playing it has an odd sense of wisdom to it, or empowering in some
    ways.

Ivan Moody (Motograter/5FDP/Ghost Machine) Just has a presence
about him with a really decent vocal range. Though I will share one of
the less aggressive songs that resonates with me.

This one is more recent, but another that speaks to me.

Eurille has the oddity of the voice of an angel, and well I can't
describe it, but it is peaceful, at least to me, kinda a happy/sad
    I guess.

I'll stop there, since there is a lot of ground to cover music wise for me. There are some older songs
from bands that may/may not have been mentioned. :)

And since I am not all sadness or aggression.
I try to be well rounded and find those odd songs that
are good for when I feel the need to write Erotica...

I guess I should mention two singer/songwriters that few people have ever heard: Kate Wolf and Diane Hildebrand. Kate was a Northern Californian who had a great reputation among the folk music set; she died way too young, of leukemia at age 44. There's a popular music festival held in her honor every year in Laytonville, California.

Diane wrote some songs that were covered by other artists, but I got to know her from her album Early Morning Blues and Greens.

Both artists had one thing in common: a very low-key delivery. Each gave the impression that you and she were the only people in the room, and that she was singing softly into your ear. Not too many singers can convey that feeling of intimacy.

Leonard Cohen. If you don't like spare instrumental backing, he won't be for you, but the man was a pure poet of despair.

    Joan of Arc

Steer your way past the ruins of the altar and the mall...

And finally, the Chelsea Hotel No. 2, the song he wrote about Janis Joplin. (Lizzy Woodridge can go fuck herself with a rusty chainsaw).

Listen to what he does at the very end of the song.

You think you can buy that kind of depth, Lizzie?

I'm totally with you on this, Iain.

For me the definitive version of "Joan of Arc" is the one by Jennifer Warnes, with a little help from Leonard himself. And the video on YouTube is devastatingly beautiful:

But I give you fair warning: it will stay with you, and it will haunt you.

Tom Waits. One of the few artists that me & my demons can enjoy together.

I'm pretty jaded, it takes a lot to move me musically, anymore. So when I want to feel something or inspire myself, I have to go that little bit extra.

Without a doubt the best songwriter I've ever found.

Odd One by Sick Puppies got me through high school. I love that song and to this day, cant listen to it without crying. my favorite lines:
    "Odd one you're never alone
I'm here and I will protect you..."

(chorus) "Hey, its gunna be ok.
Hey, you're gunna laugh at this one day!
dont let someone tell you you're no one"

I also cant listen to Shelter by Porter Robinson without tearing up. Its a beautiful song and I love all of Madeon's music, so when I heard he'd remixed this song by Porter Robinson, i had to download it. But i skip it whenever it comes up on my ipod. not because i dont like it, but because its so sad to me. I think it was partly because of the video. the video made me actually made me pay attention to the lyrics:

"I could never find the right way to tell you
Have you noticed I've been gone?
'Cause I left behind the home that you made me
But I will carry it along
And it's a long way forward, so trust in me
I'll give them shelter, like you've done for me
And I know, I'm not alone, you'll be watching over us
    Until you're gone
When I'm older, I'll be silent beside you
I know words won't be enough
And they won't need to know the names on our faces
But they will carry on for us
And it's a long way forward, so trust in me
I'll give them shelter, like you've done for me
And I know, I'm not alone, you'll be watching over us
    Until you're gone
Oh it's a long way forward, trust in me
I'll give them shelter, like you've done for me
And I know, I'm not alone, you'll be watching over us
    Until"
