I don't write too much. But I think a hell of a lot. Sometimes there are thoughts that are good enough I can't bare[omg bear/bare? BAYR?] to forget them. That's when writing comes in.

Otherwise, when I write, I just go at it without a plot in mind or anything to help me along. Then I usually get bored of whatever world I'm in and move on.

    I write because I must.

If I could speak well, then I would speak.

    But I cannot speak.

    So I write.

    It's natural

I naturally enjoy writing;I don't have to think up the story beforehand. It comes to me naturally and I pour it forth onto paper or the computer.

I don't think a writer choses to write, I think it's something which is innately within them which they have to do.

I love the opportunity writing brings to explore a multitude of lives we wouldn't necessary be able to experience ourselves, from a doctor to a soldier. To create a world completely of your own, with whatever you want it in is very appealing.

Interaction between characters as always fascinated me. Throwing a character into the deep end, in a situation they are completely uncomfortable with is always fun. The creation of a character is addictive, to work them out, create a past and personality which affects their behaviour and influences their choices.

Of course there is the beauty and power of the written word.

I could go on for years lol. As with all artists, writing is an outlet and a craft which is completely individual. As a physicist I know that two people could work out an equation and come to an identical result, ask two people to write a passage about going to shops and you'll get two completely different results reflecting the individual who wrote it.

A very intriguing question that any writer would jump at the chance of answering – and the thread is still going strong form 2007, think that says it all.

Writing for me is a way out. A way to stop the tension headaches, a way to get some sleep at night and a way to stop my social itches that I’m not capable of starching in the real world. I enjoy loosing myself in this world that I have complete control over, if a character starts to annoy me I can write them out, if someone’s situation bores me I can change it.

There are no boring conversations, no false interactions, no pathetic attempts to socialise – that is if you’re not depicting these in the realm of the unreal. But it’s this re-writing of your failures, however small they may be, to be turned into positives of what ever nature you need them to be. Does your character fail, as you did? But I bet they are seen on higher ground within the fiction.

When you’re writing everything stops and is in your hands, your eyes burn, fingers tire as you smash through your self and subconscious into God knows what time. Before you stop, finishing at an abrupt end and look back at what you’ve written, knowing that it’s complete jargon to anyone else but you – but it’s yours.

Then you before you know it, your back in the real world, collecting new material to blurt out.

    That’s why I write.

Nothing, actually. I want to write; I want to take these stories in my head and give them form and show them to people, but I'm not sure I would call myself compelled.

Sadly, I'm not one of those people to whom writing is an actual need.

Like I said, I want to write stories. I want them to be published as books, I want them to be read by many people, and I want those people to like what they read. I want to entertain, and stimulate and inspire.

...Of course, becoming very, very rich and famous from my writing would also be a definite plus. I do not deny that.

But, mostly, I want to bring great stories into the world. It's as simple as that.

I'm pretty much inspired by everything I enjoy reading or watching. It can be books, movies, comics, cartoons, anime and manga or video games.

I honestly can't remember I time I didn't want to write. At some point in my childhood I must have realized that I could not only enjoy stories created by others, but that I could actually create them myself. That was enough reason for me.

Speculative fiction, mostly fantasy. I tend to mix the genres up in whatever way I feel like, though. I'm an Anything Goes kind of shop.

The idea burns a hole in my head. Only way to make that stop is to write it.

Well to get rid of that feeling, and just to be able to tell a good story.

I have no idea. All I know is that I get the idea, and i write it. Dunno what makes me do it or why.

I don't like it... I cease to be me when I'm writing, and once I finish and come back to reality, I feel gross from sitting at the computer for so long. The feeling of accomplishment hits me way later though, so thats a plus.

I've written about superpowers, war, science fiction, fate, horror/thriller, suspense, government operations... just anything that comes to mind. however, all of my stories feature romance as a central aspect.

I write because i love to create, to create an escape from dull reality. I want my audience to be captured in something else. My writing is a product derived from my inspiration which is taken from life & other works I've read

For questions 1-4 I have the same answer: I want to write that which no one else can.

    What Do You Write?

I try to write hard sci-fi.

Honestly, I write because I have stories to tell. But more than that, I have places that never existed before that I want to show the world. I'm like a tour guide to the extraordinary. Unfortunately, I'm like a drunk tour guide that can't quite spit out what he wants to say and is describing something fantastic in most boring way. I'm working on that. Practice makes perfect, right?

Indeed, and high five for being from Texas, my friend. ;)

Anyway, I feel this to be the primary reason why I write as well, though sometimes I write out of boredom. Very rarely am I forced to write of necessity (for school, work, etc.), so most of my writing is for myself (and you guys).

I seek to refine my writing too. I write sometimes to exercise different applications of syntax and extended metaphors, and how to ninja different similes into sentences without people knowing. See, did you catch it? I'm just kidding; no similes were used in the making of this paragraph (said in an overly-burly movie announcer voice).

Sometimes I write out of desperation. I get frustrated, either because of my bipolar issues or otherwise, and I have to put pen to paper. It's either that or stab my father in the chest. :p

Regardless, now you know my motivations.

    Why do I write?

    Hi Raven,

In answer to your question (or questions:cool:), why write?

For me, I feel that I'm following my calling. If I go without writing for a while, I feel this sensation down my arms and it's as if they are drawn to the computer to get down whatever words flow from my mind. When I see those words on the screen, I feel happy and satisfied.

I'm also working towards a goal, like most writers, and that is to write my very own novel. I don't want to make millions, I just want to give someone joy from a book.

I feel more driven to write supernatural themes, especially ghost stories and I started writing this genre as early as year four.

I think I may have actually answered this thread a few years ago...

I write because I don't know how to program a game yet, I can't draw as well as I'd like, and I'd need people and money to make a movie.

Writing is just all I can do. I get these ideas for stories, and I just have to tell them to someone. I have to write them down. I can't leave them bottled up in my head.
I'm driven by the deep seated need to create. I tried drawing, but I was never good enough. I want to make games, but I still don't know enough programing. I do 3D modeling now, but without any sort of explanation they're just statues. Statues tell bad stories, unless you put a plaque up. I can't make a movie because I don't have people and I don't have as much skills with a camera as I'd like, and I'd still have to write.
In fact, for everything I'd have to write. Video games, novels, movies. Whatever I do, I need to create, I need to tell a story and entertain. I need to... get it all out. If I don't, it just seems hollow. Even just thinking about things and not writing them down feels great, but then I forget them. If I didn't write, it would be worse, I'd never be able to remember any of the ideas that I've come up with. So in a way, I write because it's the easiest thing to do.

    What compels me to write?

I actually do not know. I have always been told that I am a very good communicator, whether verbally or in writing. While in college, my favorite assignments were the ones that required me to write a paper, as opposed to the exams and special projects. I enjoyed the writing assignments because that, I felt, was my opportunity to communicate exactly what I wanted and express my own opinions on the subject in question.

    Why do I write?

I write because I feel this is the most effective means of communicating my thoughts. Verbal conversation is often interrupted, as one person interposes his own views before letting the other finish. Writing allows me to stay focused on my thoughts without the worry of losing them. Writing also lets me be creative. As an artist uses a brush to paint a beautiful scenery on the canvass, words, too, can be crafted to "paint" the imagination, producing amazing effects that could inspire, astonish, or impact the reader.

    What do I write?

If I could, I would tailor the question to: "What do I desire to write?" I wish to write fictitious stories that demand the readers to review life from a different perspective. An example of an author who has done this: Charles Dickens, in his book Hard Times wrote about the psychological impacts of the, then current, industrial philosophy. He wrote to make aware of the negative effects this world was creating among his contemporaries. (Now, I realize I may be a little off as to what his motivation was, but this is what I have gathered from the book.) Like Charles Dickens and many other writers, I want to write with a purpose, a purpose to show the world what it really is, with all of its hardships and successes, excitements and depressions, winnings and losings. I want the reader to see life from a different set of eyes, to be one with the character, to attach himself to the imaginary person as if he were the reader's second life. Then, may I show the reader what life is like or could be like.

Writing is an opportunity for me to be philosophical, to question what the existence of life means. My writings and my ideas are an attempt to make sense of what I gave fathomed. This is what I ultimately desire to write.

I write because I think people can't fully understand each other, they can't really feel how the others feel. So, writing is the best way for me to express myself.
And I'm also writing because it's technically the best thing I can do, the one thing that makes me passionate.

I write because I enjoy it, and also because I often have ideas running atound in my head that I just have to get down.

I write because it's just fun. I enjoy making up stories when I get bored [So technically, I'm not bored =P] and it's just fun to write them all out. Of course, the stories I write that are created from too much boredom tend to be sub-par with other things I create, but I don't mind too much; that's why I proofread and edit =P

I write because it's an outlet for whatever I feel. If I'm angry, unhappy, depressed, or frustrated, it all comes out in my style of writing for that time. The same goes for if I'm happy, joyful, or content.

It's a medium of communication for me as much as anything else, and I use it to show how I feel and what I want to say. As well, I use it to interact with others and help both them and me grow in our abilities.

I’m not too sure, I certainly enjoy creating/developing a world and a story, though that also comes with its frustrations. I suppose I like having a project, I love holding a finished article in my hands. In the personal statement I wrote whilst applying to do Creative Writing at University I said I admired the way authors like Murakami and Khaled Hosseini had completely captured me in their own little world, and that I wanted to be able to do that too - thinking about it that’s probably the best explanation I’ll ever arrive at as to why I try to write. :)
