    What compells you to write?
    I'd say that songs, books, and even dreams can influence me to write.

    Why do you write?
    Because the characters in my head want me to! I always have a story in my head, which I play out, and keep having scenes from the story pass through my head. I couldn't not write about them. I might not write about it straight away, but I will make a mental note, remember the scene and characters, and eventually start on it.

    What makes you write what you write?

    I have a wide interest in history, people's emotions, and music. These all make me write what I write. I like to write things that are far from my experiences but they are still things I can understand if I put myself into the shoes of that character.

    What Made you decide you liked to write?
    I don't remember how I decided I liked writing, I just remember always writing. I find it exhilarating to see something you've thought about for ages written down.

    What Do You Write?
    I have an interest in the 1950s-1980s, so most of my stories are written around these periods. I don't like fluffy, happy-all-the-time stories, so i can incorporate real life, dark themes in my stories. however, i counteract these with happy and amusing parts, so the story isn't too heavy.

    a)What compells you to write?

    The books that I read, most definitely.

    b)Why do you write?

    I write because I find a massive enjoyment out of bringing an idea to life. The process of moving from a simple thought to a full-fledged story is exciting to me, and each time I finish a piece of writing I get this strong sense of achievement.

    c)What makes you write what you write?

    Probably my interests outside of writing. For example, I'm a fan of astronomy and psychology, both of which are represented in the novella I'm currently writing. Apart from that, I'm sure the authors I've read have some influence on what I write about.

    d)What Made you decide you liked to write?

    Seeing friends and family, as well as people I've never met, react positively to my writing. Whether they're being honest or just nice, it makes me feel good in a way that nothing else does.

    e)What Do You Write?

    Most of the time I write post-apocalyptic stories involving either action, psychology, or a mixture of the two. There's just something about imagining the world you've come to know and love in ruins that thrills me. I often write about popular landmarks that have been destroyed just because the mental image I get from such scenes inspires me.

    It is a sort of therapy. A trip into the gestalt of my mental forest that lets me
    turn each fern and leaf. I write because it is my weakness and my strength. The draftsman in me, the one used to the gradients and texture of charcoal have found a similar aesthetic in words. I write mostly my observations of normal people and how they live their lives. How they muck it up. How they might be inside. And how this is something that holds meaning in the life around me or them. It's mostly overflow, my words, my '****.' Floating refuse of my digested daily subconscious that have come to lazily clump together, as **** will do.

    I started writing by accident one night. Instead of doodling whilst watching TV I started writing down the stories I had held in my head for many years. The stories were the place where I went when I didn't want to deal with real life, figured it was better than drugs and alcohol lol

    My stories began as a thriller for adults, but it became necessary to set it on another world and out of that the same main story and characters has been turned into a fantasy aimed at 10-15 year olds.

    I love my characters, I stupidly gave them temporary names when I started writing now I can't change them. King Angus, remained King Angus and Gilbert remained Gilbert even though I want to scream the name every time because of a Children's TV series. The same goes for my world and my countries lol their temporary names now have to remain.

    What compells you to write? Anything really. Sometimes I have a dream and write about it. Get inspiration from a movie or book. Or an idea just forms in my mind.
    Why do you write? I daydream far to much. So instead of keeping it all stuck in my head 24/7, I write about it
    What makes you write what you write? I just feel like writing?
    What Made you decide you liked to write? Not to sure. I've always liked to write. Even when i was little I'd staple pages about butterfly land, or my dog together. Even though they were more like picture books and didn't really have a plot. I've just always liked to write. And my 7th grade teacher wanting to read out my apparently great story to the class. And in 8th grade when the english teacher asked as to put up our hands if we thought we were good writers. Most people, including me didn't. She gave me a shocked look and was like "do you know how good you are?" (and ever since I said no, she seemed to have something against me...)
    What Do You Write? fantasy-usually about shapeshifters, witches, made up creatures etc. Sometimes Drama, romance (though I suck at it. It's really more something I do when my love life is inexistent

    God, why do I write? I write because if I don't, I go nuts. Seriously nuts. I start talking to myself. I start seeing dead animals on the side of the road and not the discarded garbage bags they really are.
    God, I write to keep myself sane.
    I write to know what it is I think
    I write when talking/yelling/screaming would not be appropriate
    I write so my mind doesn't run away with me.
    I write to forget. Almost anything I put on paper (on the computer screen) I eventually forget.
    I write so people know what I think, so I am less invisible. (Here I am! Here I am! Pick me!)
    I write to amuse myself, my friends, my dogs. (The cats are always unappreciative.)
    I write what I write because I like how the words sound.
    Primarily I write creative nonfiction meaning I take my real life and fictionalize it just enough so that the bad guys can't specifically identify themselves. They may suspect, but suspicion isn't enough. :)
    Sister Mary Earl way way way way back in 1960 convinced me I liked to write. I always called it 'pretend' or 'making up stories' I didn't know I was writing until she came along.
    What makes me write is the same as what compels me to write and why I write - I write because if I don't, my world falls apart, it ceases to make sense. I go under. Start drowning. Lose connection with the woman I am.
    I write because after all these years, it is a way of life, and I have little choice.

    Great Thread.

    :)

    I write for myself. As the head of IT in my small firm, I have no desire to leave and try to "make it" as a writer. I want to tell a story, and I want it to be one that I can read myself.

    I write because I am bored on the train to and from work.

    I write because it is something I can do to kill time at home, or to relax.

    I write I guess because I have always wanted to. I only realised it until recently.

    The very first time I wrote a story was in English class, was so enjoyable just writing :)

    I'm 25 years old and work in IT, I don't want to work in IT forever. I'd like to get my works published and if I can make it enough so that I can write to support myself....then believe me I'll be happy enough :D

    Hmmm.... Don't think about this very often.

    My stories are me, trying to get out. This is what makes me write.

    There is no why. I live, I breathe, I write. (I believe someone said something similar, and I must wholeheartedly agree)

    I make me write what I write. There is just something about strife and emotional turmoil that is so intriguing!

    When I realized that I could make the marks on paper mean something to anyone else who looked at them, that’s when I decided to write. I didn’t always like it, but I tried to not let that stop me.

    I write horribly tragic comedies. Har har har. Actually, if I shove my work into a certain genre, I mostly have fantasy or surreal. I also have an affinity for crap I made up to act as an allegory for something else.

    ~~~
    I like Wreybies’ answer. It means a couple different things to me, all of which make sense.
    I would be pretty surprised if someone’s answer was “For fame and glory!” :D
    My creative nature and inspirations compell me to right. As does my need for the friendship my characters bestow me with.
    I write because it my favorite thing to do. I write because I the thoughts and ideas in my head need to be shared. It would be an injustice to my characters to keep them locked up.
    I write whatever inspiration compells me the most.
    I have been writing before my memory kicked in so I can't anwser that one.
    I write about a differnt world. I write about a world where my characters are special. I write about the difficulty to trust. I write about friendship and love.
    What compells you to write?
    I think the thing that compels me to write more than anything else is my need to get ideas out. I do a lot of things as creative outlets, but writing is tangible in that you are able to weave what you want into your pieces.
    Why do you write?
    I mostly write to get out the urge. I will go for days without any urge to write, then will get an inspiration and need to write. Thusly, I drop whatever I am doing and write.
    What makes you write what you write?
    Probably what I read - I am the kind of person (and I think most of us are) who is influenced by what I am exposed to. I grew up reading sci-fi and short stories so I have grown to write those more than anything else.
    What Made you decide you liked to write?
    Probably the feeling I got when I first wrote a story and people liked it. Granted, it was in my 10th grade creative writing elective in high school, but I loved the feeling of being able to sit in a circle and have people tell me they wanted to keep reading what I had created. Selfish? Yes. But it's why I love it =D
    What Do You Write?
    Mostly sci-fi and short stories. Poetry when I am in deep emotional states (although its not top quality and I'd like to improve, I rarely submit it to critique because its very emotional things I write about and I fear it would cause me emotional offense if someone were to be a bit harsh with those emotions)
    1. What compels you to write? My thought provoking dreams mostly... that and my wondering mind. To some people writing is just innate, I’m one of them it just comes naturally.
    2. Why do you write? Because some dreams/thoughts are just too magical not to share, the world would be a dull and far less interesting place if nobody had written anything. What would you do with all the spare time anyway?
    3. What makes you write what you write? Pure and simple. Ambition.
    4. What made you decide you liked to write? The best feeling in the world - You get it when you can smell an old book. I want my words capsulated like that, I want to have written an old nice smelling book. The second best feeling in the world is when you've finished an A4 page of writing and start the next. It’s fresh and inspiring.
    5. What Do You Write? Steamy Romance, fantasy and teen cult (because I secretly wish it was all real. sssshhh!)
    I write for several reasons. I write to be able to get some of the ideas I have for adventures out of my head, I write because I'm a fan of books and want to try my own hand at it, I write to escape from everyday routine...
    But I especially write because I love doing it, and always will.
    The world is full of wonderful and interesting people. I often find myself wishing that I could reach out to these people and experience the world as they do. I want to enrich my life with their views. Each person has his or her own story to tell and a unique perspective.
    One of the things about writing is that it creates a reflection of the writer. Not just through story and characters but also through themes, symbolisms, choice of words – even something as simple as punctuation. Everything has meaning and tells something about that person.
    Through people’s texts, and my own, I constantly meet new people. It is an exchange that spreads happiness and creativity, a process that grows and nurtures itself. As writers we are fortunate in that we can expose a part of ourselves to the world. It is not easy and takes a lot of courage but the connections you make is well worth it.
    I write because I was never good at socially speaking, I never really got along with fellow humans as much as anyone could. All through my life, I have always had a huge imagination as a kid and still retain it now.
    Whenever I was bored my characters would keep me company, fights, plots, and countless words exchanged all in my head.(Like a war inside my head). As if I suffer from a mild Split Personality Disorder.
    It is a way for me to set my chained soul free, were I am in control. It may sound weird, but its as if my characters are actually pieces of my soul(fragments.) which makes it as if I'm reliving a past life. You know? :D
    Not to mention I was always a big fan of The Punisher, Ironman, Naruto, DBZ, Gundam, Bleach, and anything which helped fuel my imagination. These convinced me to write, as much as the books Harry Potter, Eragon, and Jimmy The Hand.
    And i write mainly Fiction/Fantasy, and Poetry/Lyrics(Though mine suck :p )
    I write, because I love to do it, for me it´s a way of sharing my points of view in an interesting way, to anyone who wants to read it. And by reading things written by other people i´m also getting to know more that person.
    For me writing, music, well Art, is a way to show who you really are to the rest of the world.
    What I write, it´s anything that suits me, interests me. Wich is basically everything, I like many different genres.
    I write because I've always been a very imaginative person. I am fascinated by stories and mysteries and anything that captures this. I know that by writing I can tap into that well of wonder and contribute to it.
    Plus, I really want to take people into Waterstones, point at a shelf and say ''I wrote that!''
    I'd have to say it's my way of escaping the restraints of only living one life and lets me wonder and explore how many ways I can twist my knowledge. I feel like we're always obsessed with hard facts and easy answers, so I love to challenge myself on how well I can craft a shroud of ambiguity around the truth.
    I write because if I don't, then I will end up talking to myself, as I play out imaginary scenes.
