I write because it chases me. I just blogged about it here:

    http://chadewest.wordpress.com/2011/01/02/being-followed/

and i love to read. I love the written word and just want to be a part of that; a contributor to the great mass of words.

    What compells you to write?
I've always been drawn to tell stories. If I don't find a way to tell them, then it is like someone stuck a cork in my brain and I go crazy.

    Why do you write?
Pride in seeing my words fill a page. Joy at feeling like I have something to say. As a way to thumb my nose at a life that too often demands I succumb. Because stories are what will be left of us after we are gone.

What makes you write what you write?
I like the fantastic. I like twists and turns and surprises. I like tragedy and twisted beauty. Anything new and unexpected. If I think I can make an idea work, then I go for it. Because I work with teen girls, I see a lot of the struggles they go through and want to write things that will comfort and speak to them.

What Made you decide you liked to write?
Couldn't tell you. I guess whatever made me made me like to write.

    What Do You Write?
Right now I'm doing a final polish on a fantasy young adult novel. I'd like to turn it into a three-part series (also mostly finished with a first draft of the sequel). In the meantime, I'm also tinkering with a few short stories. Oh, and I blog. (See below)

    What compels you to write?
Writing is my favorite way of communicating. I've been drawn to write since I fooled my teacher into believing I did something in a personal story I never did....and she believed it.

    Why do you write?
It's not only therapeutic, but it is one of the few things I do very, very well. I have so many story ideas that have been done before, but not as I've planned them. I need to finish them all.

What makes you write what you write?
    Passion.

What Made you decide you liked to write?
People read what I write. It is unignorable.

    What Do You Write?
    Urban Fantasy.
I write to poke people's brains.

    Why and what I write

The vividness of an imagined story compells me to write it down so that it has life outside of my head.

I write because it's a good alternative to breakdancing.

Probably I write what I write due to the fascination I have with the supernatural, and with heroism in the face of great personal risk. Those kind of heroes always get the girls.

I don't know that I always like to write. Often I do, but it seems that sometimes the words are talking back to me, and I don't like what they're saying. Once we reach an accord, I return to my happy place. It's much better than the room with padded walls.

I write (if you couldn't guess from previous answers) fantasy/science-fiction stories. My current project is a novel. It's much longer than anything I've written previously, and it's proving very challenging.

    What compells you to write?

Having an overactive imagination helps to compell me alot. I was one of those kids that would play in the dirt with sticks and stones. To me, it would actually be a space station with ships shooting lasers and dragons breathing fire. As I got older, I started imagining my own creations joining my favorite cartoon characters in their imaginations, even when I was a teenager. Then I tried writing faction, and that eventually led me to trying to write my own stories.

    Why do you write?
Because it is fun and a good outlet for stress. I tried giving up writing once after becoming frustrated with not quickly finishing a novel, but the urge to write pestered so I started up again.

What makes you write what you write?
I get to watch my characters go off on their own adventures. Sometimes I don't know how it will end and get surprised. I get to challenge things other authors have or haven't done in their stories.

    What Do You Write?
Mainly fantasy. I have lots of ideas for sci-fi stuff. Just haven't gotten around to doing it yet.

I am inspired by R.L. Stine. And why do I write? Because I am only 14 and writing is my passion and at this age if I complete my novel, I will be famed far. I like horror Genre from the time I was 5. I like only this Genre and l like to Read and watch it.

    Why do I write?

I've always had stories banging about in my head. I go to sleep and wake up with them. Writing helps me fix them, develop them and move on.

Also, when I read, apart from the classics of course, I often find myself disappointed and think 'I could come up with a better storyline/ending than that.'

Not conceit, I dare say others would think that about my work.

Why do I write? May as well ask why I breathe. I can't not.

I write to be someone I'm not.
Suffering from a Chronic Depression, I've always wanted to be a hero(ine). That's where most of my stories take me.
I love to be the hero. It helps with the depression.

I also write to be free. I don't want to work in a cubicle as an adult, and perhaps, just maybe, writing will help me get THERE.

I was always the kid who would rather play Cops & Robbers or Pirates with his friends than Baseball. Always loved stories when I was growing up. My imagination is what compelled me to survive. I used to create my own adventures in my head and act them out to myself in my room. I'd write truly awful stories just for the fun of it. But I never actually took writing seriously.

Instead, I got heavily into acting and film making in high school. Spent a lot of time doing theater and writing screenplays and making crappy movies with my friends. Dabbled in the occasional short story or novella here and there, but again, not too serious about the method of storytelling I chose. As long as I was contributing somehow to storytelling, I was happy.

It wasn't until I dropped out of acting school that I began to take writing seriously. Now here I am a few years later, still writing awful stories, but enjoying it immensely, because living in my head and my imagination is the only way I know how to survive. It's all I've ever known.

Though sometimes I wish I didn't rely on storytelling so much. I put a lot of pressure on myself because I know that I want to actually do something worthwhile with it or my life will be meaningless. I envy people who can get up every day, go to a regular nine-to-five, come home, kiss their wives, play with their children, go to bed, and wake up the next morning to do it all over again. I can't do that. If I'm not writing, or at least thinking about stories all damn day, I feel like my life is meaningless and worthless. I'm not exaggerating either; I really spend more time in other people's lives and worlds than I do in my own. I wish I didn't have to exist like this. I barely eat because I could be reading or writing. I don't sleep much because stories manifest in my mind and pester me incessantly, willing me to wake up and write them down. My social life has recently taken a dramatic decline because all I want to do is start my MFA program and do nothing for the next two years but read and write. My romantic life is getting unimportant because I know that I don't need other people in my life to make me happy - I can always write about them. Increasingly I'm growing further detatched from humanity and more attached to fictional characters. I wish I could stop writing forever and be content. To quote Franny and Zooey, "I wish I had the courage to be a nobody."

Now that I've graduated college, my head is getting a littler more clear. I know that I'll never be able to make a full-time living off of my writing. I'm not talented enough. I've accepted that. I also know how extremely difficult it is to get a job in publishing. But I think I could live happily for the rest of my life if I could at least find a position that puts my creativity to use, requires me to read, and allows enough time for me to still write and run my own zine. I don't need to be a successful storyteller -- I just need it to be a part of my world somehow.

Yeah, I think about this sort of thing a lot, and it drives me crazy. Heck, reading over this thing makes me want to call a shrink.

To me, it's a kind of release. I'm constantly coming up with short scenes and fictional characters, so writing is just a way of getting them out of my head.

I write because I am made to do it by my lecturers!

I write because I enjoy it. It keeps me entertained. My writing might not be that good but it keeps me occupied, even if it is random rubbish just jotted down on a page.

One of the things I enjoy the most is starting off with one line - then continue to write constantly for 2 minutes to see what you come up with.

Here is something I wrote: link

I scanned it a couple years ago, and still have not filled in the "Memoir goes here".

As for why: I just like it. I always played at writing stories and such when I was a kid. But in junior college I was leafing through a copy of Computer Language Magazine, and thought "I can do better than this." I turned the page and saw a quarter-page call for submissions with the headline "Write For Computer Language!". So I did. And the rest, as they say, is history.

And now even that success had faded into history, with a subsequent career doing Real Work, and magazines such as this one fading off into extinction.

So now I take up my well-worn but half forgotten tools and reconnect with my younger self, when I first read the submission guidelines for Asimov's (via snail mail, naturally) and dreamed of writing SF.

It's fun, except for when it's frustrating.

    I write anything....lists, thoughts, nonsense, forum posts...etc

What compells you to write? A burning in the back of my brain. An overwhelming desire to construct and create a world of life from fragments of nothing. It also gives me something to do.
Why do you write? Isn't this a rephrased version of the first question?
What makes you write what you write? There is much in this world that is unexplored. A suggestion of future convenience can quickly become a reality to the world we live in. That which is created must first be imagined, and engineers aren't very creative.
What Made you decide you liked to write? I'm still not sure if I do. I write out of a burning necessity, not idle vanity.
What Do You Write? Science fiction mostly. I can do theoretical fiction, war, and your every day (over descriptive) coming of age tale. I can also do technical writing. I'm so, so sick of technical writing, but documentation has been my life for the last few years.

    What compels you to write?

The fact that my mind is just way too damn active to put to rest, so I found a way to get those thoughts out into something productive :)

    Why do you write?

Hmm...never really thought of that question. I do it for the enjoyment of honing a craft that I believe I have a knack for, as well as contributing something in the creative field since I used to dabble in art.

What makes you write what you write?

I write in the fantasy world, mostly because that is where my mind is most of the time. I regularly play RPG video games, so I felt that this is where my niche shows through the brightest.

What Made you decide you liked to write?

Actually, my high school English teacher is what made me realized that I loved to write. He had given us a simple enough assignment; to write one page about the creepiest house we could think of. I turned a copy of the story, and eventually created my first 200 page book because I couldn't stop thinking about new places to go.

    What Do You Write?

That is always what people seem to ask us writers the moment we tell them, isn't it? I usually tell them "My subject is a fantasy-meets-reality" and that is how I feel about where I'm usually writing in. I enjoy having a fantasy element, but it loses substance for me if I stray too far in fantasy land.

    What compels you to write?
My hatred for the lack of originality adorning bestseller lists and supermarket shelves. I'm sick of seeing disposable, rehashed garbage with uninspired titles and plots which came from an online plot generator. I get it, people dig vampires, but I don't need to be told a hundred times over.

    Why do you write?
I want to use fiction as a medium to assault the borders of the imagination. The mind is there to be used, abused and torn inside out, and reading another bland post-apocalyptic zombie novel isn't going to ignite that inside me. I want to take my imaginative carnival freakshow and tour the collective realm of the mind's eye.

What makes you write what you write?
Besides the strange seven foot man wrapped in bandages who visits me every night and tells me to do so, the only thing in the world which excites my inner vision is the macabre, bleak workings of our world and others.

What Made you decide you liked to write?
When I began, I wrote down on my computer the only idea I had. I saved it as a word document entitled The Walking Abortion. My partner found it, read it and declared me creepy and slightly insane. Knowing that fictional words which I had created made her feel this way pleased me.

    What Do You Write?
When I begin, I want the world to be as it is now. When I'm done, I want the world to be irreversibly different. I want surroundings or characters to be changed by the events, whether it be through death, loss, gain or trauma. It would get labeled horror or fantasy, but I want to go beyond that to find meaning in a medium which gets shunned in reality, yet embraced in fiction.

Kinda deep for a third post?

    What compells you to write?
    Passion within myself

    Why do you write?
Because a teacher once said I never could.

What makes you write what you write?
I write only about things I know about though expierances I have encountered through lifes journey so far.

What Made you decide you liked to write?
I find words are more powerful than the spoken tongue, I feel when you read something you can feel it, when we listen we don't always hear what is saying.

    I was once told...

the people that believe themselves to be writers and approach it with any sort of confidence will never write anything of value.

those who are scared to death of the words they wish to stain a page with are the ones to look for.

    What compells you to write?
An urge to express myself. There is so much inspiration flowing through my mind; writing is the channel through which I let it all out.

    Why do you write?
I write because I'm frustrated, or because I'm sad, or because I am angry, or just because I am feeling inspired. It has become a great outlet for emotion as well as a way to challenge myself mentally.

What makes you write what you write?
What I write is usually a product of my emotions or of what happens in my life at the time that attracts my attention. A lot of my work so far has been a result of me feeling upset for some reason, or inspiration by people close to me, or stories already made by others that fascinated me. (Quite a few videogame storylines as well).

What Made you decide you liked to write?
Think I have always known that I liked to write. I have been writing for as long as I can remember, though not constantly.

    What Do You Write?
Stories, shortstories, sometimes only scenery or situational descriptions within the fantasy genre.
