Horny! I write for the same reason I listen to music or strum my guitar or watch Kim Kardashian's sex tape; it gets me excited. I wouldn't preferably compare it to breathing, because to me, breathing is more of a necessity. It's just something you have to do. No option. But writing is like loving someone or making fun of the French; it's not something you can't live without; but without it, living would just become difficult!
LOL nice ^^^ For me it's simply the joy of the creative process. As a musician, one of the most stimulating experiences is to take a riff and transform it into a full song. It's the same with writing. To start with an idea and turn it into a story -- particularly when you don't know where it's going and have to discover that within yourself -- is exhilarating.
Haven't started writing yet but once I do I write because it is one activity where only my own rules exist (other than grammar). I can do it my own way without anyone telling otherwise. Being able to create whole new worlds feels great.
I am sure I heard that in a tune once: For pleasure, for pain, I do not feel no shame; look at, my hat, I am not a self-obsessed twat. In conclusion, writing is a fun pass time, if it is somehow painful for you go to your local GP.
I have read all your answers here and I'm wondering how you maintain the enthusiasm....Sometimes I lose it... ;(
In response to iwbt: You know those idiots who say 'I don't suffer fools gladly'? that is shorthand for 'I am a rude antisocial tosser'. I am kinda torn between the two to be honest.

You write because you love it, you create , you dream , you share and you hope someone maybe enriched by your efforts.
The human brain is the most wondrous discovery so far in our history. Incredibly adaptive and creative, we went from bounding on all fours to standing on two feet, and found useful ways to use these things called 'thumbs' to translate our dreams into reality and build our world. That kind of creativity and perseverance is never ending, whether you're working a register, shipping a box or creating the next 'best thing!' The dreams and desires of the human mind are what drive us, from work to love. It creates stories it whispers to itself, using all that it sees and knows to build even more dreams to come. It wants to voyage beyond the restrictions of flesh and bone, and when reality places it's straps and ties upon it, it finds new ways. We spin out our dreams for others to see and experience, inviting them into our reality to share in what we see. To laugh and to cry. To despair and to rejoice at the turn of every word, painting like an artist with color what only we can see, and we hope others with imagine. If it wants to be expressed, it will. I've never asked myself why I like to write. Even if no one ever experiences it but me, I still do it, when it could easily remain a daydream that lasts just that day and no more. It makes me feel more than what I am. It makes me free.
What compells you to write? A creative spark, a desire to tell a story, the need to get ideas out. Why do you write? Its therapeutic, its entertaining, it gets my mind working, and I love creating characters and environments. What makes you write what you write? My unending curiosity of the universe and its potential. What Made you decide you liked to write? Microsoft Word What Do You Write? Mainly near and semi-distant future science fiction, with most of my stories taking place within the same universe and timeline.
Hi Raven I write because it is power, the only true power the mind could ever bestow upon a person. writing is as fulfilling and nourishing feelings and is as importan talking and reading and listening and responding. it is also a mind stimulus and conjur healthy waves sincs of intelligence and logic. unless you write you would never really know what the words or language is all about.
I write because I'm attached to my characters, from prince charming to the lowly brute, and writing is a way to give them some kind of existence.
In a word, masochism. I suffer from self loathing, either because I'm not at the time writing and working on a novel, or because what I've just written is, well, worthless. In the end the whole reason I write, is because when I'm writing is the only time I'm guaranteed not to suffer from self loathing. IE, "I write because I have too."
Think I've always been a bit of a Walter Mitty really My reasons are same as many of you, have a shed load of stories in my head and they need to come out to free up space. Churned out too many short stories that never went anywhere publishing wise but don't regret writing any of them, the bad and the not so bad. Oh, and that novel everyone has inside of them, I managed to get a first draft manuscript completed some years ago, something that I never thought I could manage. Never sent it off as I'm under no illusions as to its competence, but I did enjoy writing it and the half finished follow up.
On Why I Write... I write from instinct.... My procrastination often interfers with documentating my thoughts, and the progress therein. Posts such as many of the preceding are always inspirational. Since grade school, I remember being encoraged to write. Teachers/Professors have always highlighted my storytelling abilities, and so-called knack for personalizing my writing, whether creative or academic. Unfortunately, I have treated my talent as a mere hobby when it is not an objective obligation. Now, at 25, I am basically reclaiming my suppressed manifestation. Forums, such as this one are necessary for writers like myself!
Anxiety. To get rid of anxiety. Anxiety. Relief of the anxiety. Story, which is conflict, which is no other than, surprise...anxiety.
Ah~ So many well thought-out answers! I feel kinda of abashed to simply say I have a passion for it. I like bringing my thoughts and ideas to life, see if I can expand on them and turn them into interesting stories.
Hm, I don't write a lot, but I often write just go get away from some of the things going on IRL. I like the idea of being able to create my own world, and my own characters, as well as just being able to let them do whatever I want them to, however I often lack motivation to start, or continue. I don't write seriously, and I don't think I'll ever publish something, but when I can be bothered writing, it's just a nice escape.
