Simple answers, and probably the same as many, but: I love reading a great book, and have dreams of someone feeling that way about something I've written. I also enjoy it, of course. Writing brings me happiness and satisfaction. Emotion drives me. Sadness, anger, anticipation, joy. I can translate these feelings into words that, to me, desribe a scene, or an event to perfection. I've always had a fascination with books and stories, and ever since I can remember I have written, be it poetry, songs, or short stories. Whatever I feel like. I started consistently writing with poetry and songs. I grew out of that and began into short stories. It draws me back no matter how much it frustrates me, or how hard it gets, or how much time is sucks out of my life. It's like a drug that's bad for me. But what can ya do? There's no writing rehab.
What compels you to write? A flow of ideas that I can't ever seem to stop. Why do you write? Because it's an escape. It's the power to create worlds and characters. Because I have a need to express and create - I love all forms of expression and creation, I do origami, I love to draw and paint, I enjoy singing greatly as well as acting, and while I wouldn't say I love to dance, I do certainly like it and would do it if a friend wanted to go But writing - there's nuance in its expression that isn't found in many other art forms. In drawing and acting there're many nuances but none you can pinpoint as well as you can with writing. With writing it's like painting with your mind, and as always when you construct something beautiful you have a need to keep it, make it concrete, show it to people and share it, and you can't do that if the words are only in your head Why do I write? I just love playing with words. It's also a form of release, it feels safe to know you can put your feelings and visions down in words, it gives you a sense of control over otherwise uncontrollable situations in life, it puts meaning to the turmoil you feel inside you, makes it concrete and real and therefore, also normal. It helps you understand what otherwise feels greatly troubling. It's a sense of power that I can express anything I want, whenever I want, without struggle - it lets me be free to show who I am and how to feel to whom I want, without fearing that I will be misunderstood, or not understood at all. It's also greatly convenient And it's plain fun to imagine. Of all the art forms, it's the one I've found the most use out of.
What compels you to write? Playing puppets with characters and crafting worlds where everything is in my total control. MWHAHA! No. Okay seriously. What compels me are the stories in my head, the stories that I want to share with people because they bring so much joy to me. Why do you write? For some reason, when I try to communicate verbally, I get tongue-tied or clam up completely. Give me a pen and paper and I will not stop writing until pages and pages are FULL. Give me a pen and paper and the world MAKES SENSE. Writing is the only way I feel that I can vent my emotions sufficiently and SAFELY and can communicate accurately. If I don't write, all the emotions just build up inside and I explode onto people or implode on myself. Another reason - I'm continually baffled and frustrated by the human race. We're supposed to be the intelligent ones but we are SO stupid. The more I write, the more I can explore the reasons behind behavior, thoughts, etc. and things become a little clearer. But my primary reason? Is an escape. I can create a world where I (sort of ) know what's going on...so long as my characters don't rebel against me. I can dream up some zinger comeback for that bratty kid or stuck up dude and they are SPEECHLESS...something that NEVER happens in real life. What makes you write what you write? I think what MAKES me write is my desire to let loose my imagination and explore things, worlds, characters, that intrigue me. What Made you decide you liked to write? That's actually a tricky question. Art and writing have been my major interests for as long as I can remember. I remember when I was not yet a teenager, thinking that I wanted to write and illustrate my own novel BUT, I didn't know how to paint and I had NO faith in my writing. It's taken me YEARS to finally start writing and there are days that I don't like writing if I'm going to be honest about it. But what I liked about writing is the ability to go inside my dreams and live them. To create people and worlds that I absolutely ADORE and bring them to life on paper for other people to love them too (I hope ) Books have ALWAYS been a major part of my life. They've surrounded me (sometimes literally!) all my life. When life stinks, I go to a book. When I find my favorite book in the store, I have a mini squee party because they're my friends. That's really what made me realize that I liked writing - the ability to create characters that I loved so that other people could find joy in these friends of mine. Books have been instrumental in crafting my worldview, crafting my own character, my own thoughts, my own emotions and I want to do that for my own stories. Yes, the re-writing and the tense changes (UGH) and the grammar and the bunny trails and the sleepless nights and the throwing of misbehaving manuscripts across the room is a pain. And yes, there are still times where I think that I don't have what it takes to write, that I don't like writing THAT much... But then I hit the sweet spot. A beautifully intricate, flawed, and deliciously human character pops into my brain and he's got a story to tell me, something to prove. A bit of me lies in that character and I realize as I set to writing his or her story, I really do love writing with all it's difficulties. What Do You Write? That depends. I'm still finding my stride. I will write anything (to an extent ) so long as the plot is intelligent, the characters are lovable and have something to prove, something to overcome, and the world interests me. Mostly historical fiction, *some* dystopia, and, if the story is right, fantasy. I'd like to try some gothic novel but I don't care to be bunched in with the love-sick barely-teenager paranormal crowd. Oh and there MUST be a heroine to kick butt.
