I can go one better than that. The 'How are you? / How you doin'?' opener is so expected, that I've heard people automatically answer, "Yeah, not bad." when the other person says hello, but in fact, didn't even ask how they were. It happens when the person is so caught up in trying to act relaxed and natural that they don't even listen to what's being said. Fucking small talk. I hate it. This is why people shouldn't feel oblidged to talk, just for the sake of it.
