Folks, what do you think about this metaphor about the violin? :

The violin, this wild horse, was completely tame in her grasp.

Tame implies that everything dangerous or exciting has been removed. Music that I like I would never describe as tame. Elevator music is tame. Tame is the last step before lame.

To me the best music is more like leaping on a wild horse and hanging on, managing to coax it in the right directions, but always with the danger that it could throw her and possibly trample her any moment.

But the image of the violin as a horse feels off. Too concrete I think. It isn't the violin that's wild but the music.

I love stuff like this! We should have one every week.

At the allegro, Momo's hair pulled loose from her chignon, and by the prestissimo it was a bed-touseled mess. She didn't notice. Her eyes were closed. Even when the front row stood, unable to restrain their joy any longer, she still didn't see. Fingers blurred through arpeggios. Rapid fire pizzicati chased bow double-stops. The orchestra swelled and her borrowed violin, the famed Il Cannone, soared above it all.

My description's the first sentence, but it's hard to stop momentum so I did more. I mean, no sentence exists by itself. Plus, I got to type pizzicati!

I published a novella about Tartini once. The Il Cannone is Paganini's though. Still annoys me that people have been allowed to play it, as it was sacrosanct for more than a century, but I'll go with the flow.

Paganini's Caprices are just about as wild as it gets!

The thing is , though, I'm not talking about music. I'm talking about the instrument. The violin is notorious for being extremely difficult to play and handle. And she appears to have manged to tame it!

As the violinist brought the piece to a fiendish crescendo, a few strands of hair fell from her bun and danced madly to the rhythm.

Folks, can I use "tendrils" to talk about those strands of hair hanging loose?

Like "A few tendrils had escaped her bun"?

I think that works. Be careful though, or you'll create an image of Cthulu.

What do you mean by careful? Do you mean the current sentence might create that image?

No, currently you're fine. But if you add to the tentacle imagery at all she could become old squidface.
