Short Story Writing Contests - any tips?

Discussion in 'Genre Discussions' started by peachalulu, Sep 13, 2012.

I'm thinking of entering a short story writing contest. There's no theme involved. But there is a 1500
    word limit.

Just wondering if anyone has ever entered them and if you have any tips to share - Like don't write
in I pov or definitely write in I pov.

I tend to write kooky stories and I'm wondering if I should play it safe and work on something more serious?

Is this a magazine, journal, university publication...? First thing is to check the guidelines to see what sorts of stories they're looking for, if they indicate any. Second, look to see what they typically publish. If they usually go for SciFi, for example, there's not much point in submitting a romance.
