Yes, I've got to walk or cycle for about the same length of time as I plan to write. I find it very hard to sit down cold and write, but if I've been exercising, I have a chance to juggle all the characters and dialogue and plot elements around in my head. It makes a huge difference.
I wish I would go exercising before writing, but my schedule is always jam-packed. Time moves so fast :/
I've tried it. The high after exercising does nothing for my brain for writing (rocks though). Writing often makes me want to exercise though (though, sitting on my ass for hours on end typically does that).
Running on the treadmill while listening to something awesome like Hans Zimmer or Two Steps from Hell = my formula to generate my greatest ideas. Try it some time.
How many words do you try to write a day? And how many words do you usually end up writing a day? Just curious
Word count for short stories and other fictional stuff... sometimes none at all. But I do manage to write thousands of words each day, just none of those words really counting towards fictional stuff. lol
I tried to impose a goal on myself of xxx number of words per day, but I abandoned it for two reasons: 1) life intervenes and you simply have to deal with it, even if it is inconvenient; 2) every time I start worrying about word count, the writing goes down the pipe - word count in writing is like pitch count in baseball, a marginally useful statistic that has been blown completely out of proportion.
I don't have a word limit. Some days I can write 1000 words, while other days I only manage 50. Anyway, I feel like setting word limits sacrifices quality.
Unfortunatly I don't have all day to work on my writing, but I try and get an hour or two done a day. I can do about a thousand words in an hour, so if I had all day to work on it then I could easily do about seven thousand words a day.
I generally write around 2000 to 5000 words a day, weekends off. Lately I've been trying to maintain a writing streak (and finish a novel), so I've been writing most days, even weekends.
I try to write 1000 at least when I am in my writing phases but when they go, I go long periods without writing anything simply cause I am done and am not ready to start something else.
Yeah pretty good amounts I can do about a thousand words in an hour, so if I had all day to work on it then I could easily do about seven thousand words a day. that would be amazing if I could do 7000 words in a day
^^^^I guess I could do that much too if that's ALL I did and had lots of inspiration. I think I did too once. But it's an extreme rarity.
i never count... nor see any reason to... that said, when embroiled in a major project, i've spewed out words for as much as 18-20 hours a day, for weeks at a time, only stopping to eat if someone brought me food... so the old standard writer's goal of 10 pages a day is never a problem for me...
5k words is crazy for some writers, not so crazy for others. Depends how fast you write I write around 1000 words an hour. So for me, 5k is about 5 hours of work. See? Just depends.
Not really, I can speed type and I also know exactly where my story is going. What you'll find as you practice writing it will become easier to type and as long as you know what's going to happen in your story, you will find it easier to type and your word count will increase dramatically.
I don't use word count as a way of tracking progress. The only time I check my word count is if I'm trying to target an size of story (i.e. under 5000 word short story). Tracking your progress based on your word count is dangerous. You'll find yourself adding words to get the count up when what you should really be doing is adding quality. 100 words of quality writing will get noticed faster than 150,000 words of garbage.

It depends on what your goals are and where your skill level is at. Writing fast does not mean writing badly, anymore than writing slow means writing well. 100 words of quality are great, but if that's all you have, you won't sell anything because 100 words isn't a novel If you want to be a professional fiction writer, you need to be able to produce work. Again, it's whatever works for the writer. Everyone is different. If your speed is working for you (ie you are accomplishing your goals), then great, that works. If it isn't, then like anything else, it might be time to re-evaluate what you're doing. I don't see myself as that fast, I just put the hours in. My goals, for me, involve writing at least 3 books a year, so I have to put the hours in to meet that goal.
