What are some good rules to write fiction targeted for young adults? I feel it's important to have a relatively young protagonist. Aside from that I planned on using common sense. I feel that YA novels shouldn't contain too much violence, but obviously Suzanne Collins proved me wrong. Are there guidelines to writing for that particular genre?
YA novels generally have a protagonist in that age group, but can cover any topic under the sun that people in those age group might go through. Making friends, abuse, sexual violence, road trips, adjusting to change in life, dealing with death, drugs, alcohol, anything really. If you want to write in the genre read widely. I read nearly exclusively YA lit and there is just as much variety as their is in adult fiction.
