This would basically be the same idea as limiting how many likes could be given away daily/weekly, right?
I did explore this option, but it doesn't look like it's easily possible at the moment. I'd have to hire a custom developer. If someone wants to donate a few hundred I could get it done though
I just had a kind of kind of crazy idea... Is there a Negative Like system built into the software? And if so, would it be possible to just relabel negative likes as Rep and give positive results? Now, I admit, I do not know what is involved in coding a forum or how any of this works... But I though that I would just throw it out there *shrugs*
It's a good idea, but this software doesn't come with negative likes. There is third party software add-ons that allow multiple ratings (both positive and negative) that could solve this. Problem is that 1) it costs money, and (more importantly) - it requires disabling the default like system. While we could then still have likes, it wouldn't use the default like system, which could impact other areas of the site and would require we need to stay committed to the third party add-on basically forever. That said, I'll revisit the topic and double-check my research.
Assuming I implemented a daily or weekly limit on the number of likes you give out, and made it so giving likes don't adversely impact your reputation, should likes be public or hidden?
I don't think it's meaningless to say someone made a good point or someone made you laugh or you give a friendly welcome to a new member. I also like being alerted to a like. I don't care so much about the totals I agree full lines of green bars under everyone's names wouldn't be meaningful.
I wasn't a fan of likes in the first place. When it changed from a private, 'This was an excellent post' to a public 'Yeah, what they said!' it became a system of public division.
I have no issue with them being hidden or public. I'm fine either way. Divisive topics are divisive topics and are the only topics where I could grudgingly see cause for concern given that people prefer to claim allegiances offsides, but such topics are by far a tiny portion of overall conversation taking place in the forum and I do not think they should be what takes precedent in whatever decision you make, Daniel.
Frankly, now that many members are getting a better grasp of the economics of the give and get of likes, I'm seeing a shift toward the use of the @ to tag a member and verbalize appreciation/question/disagreement. The marketplace is shifting, so to speak, as supply and demand are better understood. I think this is great. It shows a growing frugality as regards the giving of likes, which for a while there were becoming so abundant as to be meaningless.
There's a drawback though, using @Someone it a lot closer to calling someone out if it's not a warm fuzzy reply. Of course, maybe I'm one with a bigger problem there since I challenge claims and that upsets a lot of people. I post evidence suggesting someone's claim is false, they read: personal attack.
Likes? Aw, I'm dishing 'em out like candy now. Why not? It's kind of a boost to turn on the computer in the morning (or during the day) and see alerts to tell you that people have 'liked' something you said. If something needs clarification, the @ factor can be brought in. And there's always the personal message ...er, I mean 'conversation.' As long as there isn't any negative 'liking' which shuts people down, I'm happy. I liked the old system better, but since we've got this one I'm willing to wallow. Why not? The reputation green dots are all over the place, and seem to appear and disappear without any rhyme or reason, so I don't pay attention to them any more. (Last time I looked I had NO green dots ...but several weeks ago I had 7 or 8 of them. Before the changeover I had 3. So ...who cares? I don't.) Let's just have fun, and let our reputations 'grow' because other members become familiar with us, not because of green dots.
Cool, a fellow bar-less comrade. How funny to think bars = less generous. I take it one gets more bars for people liking one's posts but one loses them for letting others know one likes theirs as well.
Hi Daniel. Sorry for not getting back sooner. I just use Vista windows Pro and whatever IE comes with that. Now however the problems grown worse with the blue bar extending further down the screen and this graphic doesn't even seem to include the other blue bar over the top of it with the WF logo etc. Sorry, tried to post it twice but the security error box keeps flashing up. Cheers, Greg.
Just realized that the birthday thing at the bottom of the front page is gone? Any chance we could get that back? I just realized that someone's birthday was in Sept. and I would have made a thread for that had I been paying attention...
since my 75th was 9/14, i, for one, am not too unhappy that my becoming 3/4 of a century old wasn't advertised to all and sundry as front page news, trish! love and feeble hugs, m
Why? Surely you aren't bashful about having seen many sunrises, and being able to look forward to the next one! Call it out proudly.
all right... ok... you win! I'M 75 BLEEPIN' YEARS OLD NOW, KIDS!!! [my achy-creaky body is, anyway... thankfully, the brain's still toolin' along at peak performance levels]
Well there's your first mistake. Don't use IE anything. IE 7-8-9 don't use the international HTML standards. Microsoft made their own system, hoping that everyone would adopt it. Then they kept using it because [reason]. IE is a horrible little program guaranteed to screw up your website. Now what I came in here for: Stop screwing with that menu bar dammit! I'm trying to learn the layout, while you're jerking it around.
@Daniel Got this error just before you backupped the database today: Code: An exception occurred: Too many connections in /home/spider7/public_html/library/Zend/Db/Adapter/Mysqli.php on line 333 Zend_Db_Adapter_Mysqli->_connect() in Zend/Db/Adapter/Abstract.php at line 315 Zend_Db_Adapter_Abstract->getConnection() in XenForo/Application.php at line 684 XenForo_Application->loadDb() call_user_func_array() in XenForo/Application.php at line 921 XenForo_Application->lazyLoad() in XenForo/Application.php at line 952 XenForo_Application::get() in XenForo/Application.php at line 1336 XenForo_Application::getDb() in XenForo/Error.php at line 52 XenForo_Error::unexpectedException() in XenForo/Application.php at line 363 XenForo_Application::handleException() I am pretty sure others got it as well, but I thought I'd post it here for you anyway...
It goes away when Daniel's done futzing. But it was particularly annoying when I was trying to finish up the short story contest threads. A little more warning would be nice.
I have a blue bar running across my screen hiding the Writing Issues Forums and the messages in my inbox come in scrambled because of it. I am using PC laptop HP series running Windows 7. Any suggestions you can provide to remove this bar would be great.
