Your profession. What you like & what you don’t.

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by Wreybies, Jun 22, 2008.

    What do you do?

    I am an interpreter.

What do you like about your job?

I get to work from home. I don’t spend money on gas, or work clothes, and I NEVER get stuck in traffic going to or coming from work.

What do you not like about your job?

I don’t get along with the majority of others who do my job. Interpreters are a strange bunch. They tend to treat their profession with a solemnity usually reserved for clergy. We often get, “You speak two languages? So does every kid in Miami. How does that make you a professional?” This makes most interpreters touchy about their jobs and somewhat stand-off-ish. There are all kinds of web forums for interpreters. I hate them all. I’ve been called cavalier about my attitude. It was thrown out in as close an approximation of a four letter word as most interpreters will allow themselves to use. I thought it was great! I was banned from that forum! :D Can you believe it? Little old me? :p

    What do you do?

    I am a teacher.

What do you like about your job?

Knowing I'm leaving this world better than I found it. Touching student's lives. Having time to spend with my family.

What do you not like about your job?

Seeing those students who, years later, still fell through the cracks, got arrested, or died.

Best of all is that the forum is heavily frequented by my fellow interpreters who work with Language Line Inc.

Two days later I got an e-mail from my boss: "So, heard ya' got banned!" :p

    What do you do?

    I have 3 titles. wife,mom,grandma

What do you like about your job?

the titles, hugs, kisses, I set my own hours,
I give lots of love and receive 10 times as much in return

What do you not like about your job?
nothing that I can think of.
maybe picking up the dirty socks that pushed under the desk.
I know let him pick them up himself. But then he wouldn't have
any clean socks to put on for work.

    What do you do?
    I'm a foreign English Teacher.

What do you like about your job?
Easy hours, free house, good money, funny students, respect from some of the students, little planning required (I like thinking on my feet), and the fact that some students actually think I know something and have come to me for help.

What don't you like about your job?
The horrible feeling you get when you make a joke or try to explain something serious or jokingly, and the only reaction you get is the cold, hard stare of the students. Marking exams (takes so bloody long). Virtually no help from my supervisors who speak little English.

    What do you do?

I'm a marketing secretary in a sports federation. I do all kinds of things from holding huge parties to calculating the wages (which I'm doing right now).

What do you like about your job?

I've never liked my job, but I've learned to... accept it. :) I want to be a writer so nothing else can really satisfy me. :D I do like the moments when I can be creative at work.

What do you not like about your job?

I don't like my boss. :p I'm a people person and I should be doing something that allows me to help others. Here, I'm just wasting my time. I have a mortgage, though. My husband can't pay all the bills. :)

    What do you do?

    I work in a lab.

What do you like about your job?

Let me get back to you on that.

Edit: I make money off it?

What do you not like about your job?

I don't like working with a microscope. I don't like wearing gloves. I don't like washing the equipment. I don't like measuring things. I don't like working with numbers. I hate making reports.

    Oh, well. It's life.

    What do you do?

    I'm an editor.

What do you like about your job?

The fact that I have it. I don't know a lot of people who graduate and immediately get a decent job with benefits.

What do you not like about your job?

Two things. One: I hate having to edit the same stuff over and over again. Same material, same letters, same mistakes. Some people just don't get it. The second dislike is that I'm doing the work of two people: editor and writer. I usually work 10-11 hour days and still don't get everything finished.

    What do you do?
    I'm a wedding photographer

What do you like about your job?
I love seeing peoples emotions and capturing them from behind the lens. I love being creative with my shots. I love watching the groom's reaction as he watches the bride walk down the aisle, I love first dances, and I really love father/daughter dances. The food usually isn't half bad either! I love designing albums too.

What do you not like about your job?
I have to be gone on Saturday nights, which isn't always fun. Editing and processing images afterwards is one thing I can't stand either - I usually find a way to procrastinate on it! Imagine taking 4000-5000 images at a wedding and then having to trim that down to 1000 images to show the bride and groom. Then editing those 1000 images so they're client ready is not fun either.

I'm also a student getting ready to go into teaching. Hopefully I'll get to update this with another profession in January!

    What do you do?
I put single use surgical instruments into cardboard containers, then place them in plastic pockets as an unforgiving machine jerks the endless sheet of plastic forward.

What do you like about your job?
There's a good chance that I'll either get fired or quit very soon.

What do you not like about your job?
    I get up at 4.45AM.
I drive for just under an hour to and from work.
I work for 8 hours, doing the same ****.
Whilst everyone is nice, there's noone who i can remotely form any friendship [even just as work friends who talk about anything] with (I just assume that having someone to talk to whilst you do meaningless junk is the only thing that stops you from drinking yourself to death if you decided to do the job permanantly).
It makes me want to die.

Granted, this is only temporary. I start uni in september, which will be glorious , as i'll be studying Lit & creative writing, and i can hopefully get a job at a bar/shop, and i'm already acclimated to living off of limited food, so i'll be shiny.

I don't have a job. I want one, but I don't have a driver's license yet, we only have one van, and nobody else can provide transportation, especially with gas prices going up. But my dad works at the university here (and from what I hear, he likes it), my older brother has like a billion jobs (most of them computer or music related so he never needs to leave the computer - lucky), and my younger brother mows lawns.

I used to pet-sit for people. I had friends who would go on vacation a lot. But that's barely a profession. My dad wants me to become a professional writer, and guess I agree with him. And since he works at the university, I can take the classes I need for free! :p I'm probably also gonna take biology, 'cause that's another thing I like.
