I know this is a little irrelvant to the whole how do you write. But do you get inspiration when the bird poops? (I know its a bit disgusting and immature, but I just wonder)
hahahaha...OMG!....Now, that is a funny thought!! If I was writing about bird poo..then I guess, I would have to say, yeah...!!! LOL! Inspiration comes in all forms I guess!! hahaha..
I always use third person...I just like the way the thoughts flow out on paper, I reads better and makes more sense to me. It is widely open to preference however, so just play with the different P.O.V.'s and decide which one works best for you.
Well you don't just have to write about bird poo. You could be writing about a sewage system or even about forest. You know something like: All the forest was beautiful the smell of feces filled my nose.
As a reader I avoid first person with a passion unless it's a short story or it gets boring. I can't quite explaining it but in first peson I get a feeling I am being told something and in third I am shown. I like to be shown and not have to do all the brain work behind the story. Then again that is what I read for a daily staple, I have a friend who will not read anything that isn't in first person. So it's a taste. There are some stories that work better with one or another, I always thought detective and ghosts stories are better in first. Fantasy and raw horror in third. When something is spooky or a puzzle, it's fun to be that guy. When someones insides are slowly being removed, I don't want to be that close to that guy. if that makes sense.
Anywhere, really? I usually get a lot of ideas when I'm on the metro or in the car staring out of the window. But I agree with Dave, I do tend to do a LOT of writing whenever I'm ambushed with work (aka finals ]
I also write longhand first and then type it up. I get up around an hour and a half before I need to and write in the mornings, I've found that's when I'm at my best. After work just doesn't work for me.
I do it in the old dining room, only because that's where the computer is and I can't write by hand nearly fast enough to catch the thoughts as they go through my head. Gets way too frustrating.
I guess the only "atmosphere" I really need is in my head. If I feel like writing, then I can write. Maybe the fact that I write fantasy and it's all in my head anyway helps?
if there isn't one already, there should be a bumper sticker that says, 'Writers do it EVERYWHERE!'... ;-)
that one's not so funny, cog... my third daughter/fourth child was a senate page back in the 70's, which was the heyday of page-turning, if you'll pardon the awful pun... she was the first-ever female head page and said the elevator operators [also youngsters] were prime prey for the old creeps, too... thankfully, most of the perps preferred boys and she made it through her 9 months there with virtue intact... thanks, in great part, to her sponsor paul laxalt, who was a family friend and very protective...
But the essence of humor is dancing on the edge of the precipice; confronting our fears and pain, taking a deep breath, and blasting them down with laughter. Sorry if that one hit a tad too close to home though.
I do my best writing while I am driving. I wish I could write and drive at the same time. I usually type it up on my laptop whenever I stop.
I totally agree with this. I would write spectacularly in Starbucks if I could actually go there and sit by myself (without my DS)
I do planning and drafting when I'm at work or school, and when I get home I take every minute I can to get on the computer. Then I play MUGEN for a bit, buzz over my software projects, write for a bit, and then play more MUGEN.
Starbucks is a great place to draw inspiration from. I have come upon some great character sketches just from watching the people flow in and out. My comment on the the large leather bag, that was actually based on a somewhat older, artsy, woman I spotted while visiting with my brother. She came in and I started writing... I was intrigued by her choice of clothing and that leather bag, I had to introduce myself. I discovered she was an Art professor at one of our colleges here in Jacksonville...quite an extraordinary woman. That was a cool moment!
I usually write in my notebook for ideas, drafts, etc. Then I'll actually write on my family's computer -- mom and dad won't get me a laptop
Directly on my computer. As far as notes are concerned... To find a pen, then a page, and then a hand...not easy.
I write at the computer at home. When i'm in my creative writing class at school, i can't think properly, so i just try to get small ideas and character names. When i'm in bed, that's when i imagine the story, and progress in it. I Imagine myself as the main characters, and pretty much live the story. When i have time the next day, i start typing up what i've thought of. When you're in bed thinking for about 3 hours, it's hard to forget the things you've come up with.
Until about a year ago, I used to do the most writing in History classes on paper, even though it was one of my favourite lessons. Lol. Nowadays, when I can be bothered, I write straight onto the laptop.
A lot of times I write in the kitchen or the living room. I like to have some sort of noise behind me (it's impossible for me to write in silence), so I usually have the radio or television on in the background.
