  1. List of story types with word counts

I keep needing to look this up, so I'm putting it right here where I can always find it. Flash: under 500 (sometimes under 1,000) Short: Normally considered 5,000 to 10,000, but can be anything over 1,000 Novelette: 7,500 to 17,500 Novella: 17,500 to 40,000 Novel: 40,000 to 110,000 at the extreme ends, with 50,000 to 100,000 being more the norm

  2. Dreams/nightmares

I really don't know what to call them any more, they start as dreams and develop into nightmares or something else in between? At first you could be in control and little by little you lose that control. You notice it, all you have to do now is see what happens and pray you wont feel anything that's coming. You feel the fear, the pain, all the feelings. I cannot run away from it anymore, or hide. I can only take a glimpse of what is to come. Just a glimpse. Since is not the first time any...
  3. Grimdark My Way

What exactly is the grimdark genre, and why is it so awesome? Well, I imagine that once I answer the first question, the answer to the second will instantly become apparent. In case it needs to be stated, my conceptualization of the fabulously ferocious grimdark genre is merely that — mine. Others will disagree, and they’ll likely (hopefully) have thoughtful reasons for doing so. This disclaimer will hold true for most, if not all, of my blog posts going forward. With that out of the...

So this first entry is going to be a little warm-up. everyone always wantd to rush into things right? I've learned my lesson the hard way with that. so focused on the end-game then the actual journey itself. life is about getting to know things. I know as a child for me I had the feeling of constantly being rushed. everything needed to get done on someone elses time. racing against a clock that never stops. We live in a world that never stops. We never have the same moment Twice. even if its...

  7. What is Next in Human Evolution. (Spoilers)

My recent reading of Darwin's Origin of Species has me thinking about our evolution as a species. At quarter of the way through Darwin's work, I decided to re-read something I had read during my aborted attempt at graduate school. It was an excerpt from The Descent of Woman by Elaine Morgan titled The Escape Route: The Aquatic Theory of Human Origins. In it, she argues that that roughly five million years ago during a climate upheaval that turned much of Africa to desert, and drove our...

So yeah, I suppose I’ve been away I guess there’s just not much to say I could say hello, how’s it going guys? I could tell you just how high we’re gonna fly things will be great, just you wait and see these things I promise, revolutionary oh boy oh man oh that’s cool i bet you’ll fail, you tool, you fool. but guys here’s the thing, here are the facts sometimes things are harder to put into act my body writhes - my mind’s mind - still free beaten, broken, a mental prison, a lost key now...

  9. Contest Finalist Selection II

In addition to posting about the things I look for in an entry, I'm also going to post about what I actually do to select the story. Firstly, I'll wait until the contest is closed to new entries. I don't read any of the stories until the contest is closed. After that, I'll print off all the entries and read them that way. I've found this to be more convenient and easier to read than on a computer screen. As I'm reading, I'll take notes on negatives of the story, relevance to the contest...
