What genre is your story? I'm sure we can help finding markets for you to submit. Still no word from my friend about what's going on with my story, but a lot of the time no news can be good news. Here's hoping.
Just wanted to let you know there's some movement happening over at A Public Space. But it's all over the place. Anywhere from 28 to 357 days. But there's been a good amount of them recently reported on duotrope. I'm at 145 days now. I kind of doubt anyone over there has read my story yet. It's kind of hard to tell right now.
Aim high is right. I'm all for it. And they do have people reading the slush over there. I've gotten a few personal rejections from them. One was so good that my friends took me out to celebrate. I have a friend of a friend who sold a story to The New Yorker. She might have an agent, I don't know. But she's not a big name. Keep trying. I've been sending them stories on and off my whole life. They used to offer submitters a subscription for $10 a year. Remember they come out weekly so it was a super good deal. It was practically the cost of an issue. I love New Yorker fiction. So, way back I was really only submitting to get the magazine. I think the key in to really pay attention to the tone of their fiction. I think that's the key with them. The tone and the pacing are common things that stand out to me as a reader.
Interesting, thanks for this! Is your story under "in-progress" or under "received"? 28 to 357 days is a serious amount of variance. Also, if you get the chance, could you PM me the latest stats on that other literary journal I was asking you about? (On a side note, I can't wait until I can reactivate my duo trope account.)
I think mine has been in-progress for awhile. That can just mean its been assigned to a staff reader. With their backlog who knows when they actually read a story. How many days has your story been with them? The spread is sort of crazy. Todays reported responses are coming in at 117 to 130. I try them often, but I know it's pretty hard to get in there. Do you know about their fellowship? The deadline is in the fall, but I've been applying for it in recent years. You should check it out at some point. I'll look that up and PM you. And good luck on both your submissions.
Mine has also been in progress for a while. Mine has been out on submission for 129 days overall which is interesting. I don't think I'd be eligible for the fellowship given I'm not American. It would be pretty cool though. Thanks for looking that up for me! You too.
A little update... I heard from my friend at the literary journal. My story was plucked from the slush but now has to make it through two editorial meeting. This is not going to be a quick thing. The longer the wait the better with this one. My friend said she was talking with her boss about another publication that I've been in. My friend then brought it up and her boss said to ask me for a story. That's basically the deal right now.
I'm not getting my hopes up. Everyone is rejecting me. I would like to believe I'm due for some good news, but it's just really tough out there.
They’ve asked me back on the radio, heh heh...to narrate that stoopid dragon story...pre-record this time... That’s good, innit? I dunno, so much going on/down...
Um... Shit! I just got an email that when duotrope tried to run my credit card for the auto-renew it was declined. Getting rejected is expensive. Putting me in the poor house, over here. Hopefully, I can get duotrope back soon, but I can't afford to submit my work all the places I want. I hit up the free-to-submit and big timers. But then there is this whole mid level of publications that charge $3 to $5 to submit. And I try and try and they add up. And I'm actually scared to add them up because then I think I would feel like more of a loser. It doesn't matter. The only record of any of that is on duotrope. And, apparently, my account doesn't have enough to cover the cost of my subscription. Yes, I am a real working writer.
Acceptance from Litro submitted 20.11.2018 I had completely given up on that one, can’t even remember if Litro is green belt or brown, or a black belt New Yorker... they took a really early draft...how do I fix that with the sub? Maybe early draft was better? :/ Kind of good...well done me. [Research update - q big magazine has published manbooker types, @mat dribbles a little bit tho mat is at work @7 days a week forever]
Never heard of Litro but well done Mat Not sure about the early draft thing, you don't keep copies of everything on your pc? Unless I'm cracking on the wrong end of the stick, entirely possible
537 day rejection from Gorse Journal. Does anyone think "[Y]our work received careful consideration here." means the piece might have been in with a chance, or does that sound like standard form rejection to you? (It's the same one you looked over for me the summer of 2018, @deadrats .) I basically wrote that piece with Gorse in mind so a bit disappointed, but good to receive closure.
537 days of careful consideration is some consideration. I know, it goes through the process, I'm just making some jovial banter.
A 137-day form rejection from Copper Nickel. They were rejecting in the 50s. Then recently they hit the submissions that were out around what mine was. On duotrope many of these are being reported as personals or even shortlisted. My rejection is just there flat out, standard form. That kind of sucks. It would seem my story was passed up or in a group to give a second read. But then there was nothing to say about it? I'm only venting about this because I see the personal rejections reported and it would have been nice to know how far my story made it. That's not something places seem to tell you unless you actually do make it far in the process. So, I'm guessing whoever hit reject really didn't see anything there worth commenting on.
